The second element of the national transformation we seek is the ability to contribute meaningfully to society. Scientologists use what they know to help others succeed in all corners of life. Their help is not limited to their own. They care for the livelihood and success of others around them, and if these impressive quarters that we are here to open today are any lesson to go by, it can be said that competence is one of the hallmarks of Scientologists.
This brings me to the third element of our national rebirth — a value system.
If we are sincerely to value human life, we must value as well the land on which we live and other forms of life that provide sustenance and energy for the survival of our kind. I have seen a living demonstration of a system of values — exemplified in members of this Church.
Your concept of the dynamics of life translates into a passion for preserving the heritage of our nation. Your efforts to clean up and improve the environment, even planting trees and establishing nature reserves, sets an example for many others.
Those values were also evident in your work and perseverance through the difficult
years of our past. You never wavered from what was right. You never faltered
in your mission to uplift the spirit of human kind. These qualities are important
in realizing our dream of a new South Africa. Your Founder, L. Ron Hubbard,
observed, and I quote:
"A being is only as valuable as he can serve others."
The opening of this Church greatly extends the service you can bring to the vibrancy and vitality that is the essence of the new South Africa.
We in government work under the banner of creating an African renaissance. I believe it is fitting that the African renaissance should come from this country.
And I sincerely believe that you and your church will play a vital role in realizing that renaissance, for all the citizens of Africa.
So again, on behalf of this great nation, I welcome you to our Church. I welcome the contribution, the huge contribution we are making to the quality of life of our people through the programs that you bring to us.
Thank you very much.
